Along the Texas Gulf Coast, coastal live oaks provide a unique visual that symbolizes the character of the region.
Wind-bent oaks permanently lean away from the coastline and bayfront in deference to the constant winds that brace the area. Further inland, the beloved "Big Tree" has now survived what is likely her 40th or 50th hurricane. These oaks, though battered and broken at times, have adapted to the specific demands of this place and, in turn, have lasted decades, if not centuries.
The people here bear many of these same characteristics. While they, too, may find themselves battered and broken in the aftermath of a great storm, there is little doubt that they will regain their footing and be that much stronger the next time around.
